Edward Pennington

Edward Thomas Pennington was a British theoretical physicist from Kent, England, who later lived with his family in Baltimore, Maryland. He held doctorates in theoretical physics and applied mathematics and worked in academic and remote research settings. Edward was autistic, lived with epilepsy, and received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt during a summer 2021 intracranial-pressure crisis.

Education and Career

Edward completed dual doctorates at Cambridge University. His research included quantum lattice theory, chaos theory, quantum time asymmetry, and neural-network-based physical modeling.

He taught physics at Cambridge and later attempted to continue in institutional academia at Johns Hopkins after his family moved to Baltimore. Repeated failures to accommodate his autistic communication and sensory needs contributed to his departure from university employment. Edward continued as a consulting theorist and remote researcher.

Communication and Access

Edward spoke in a measured, exact register and tended to avoid contractions. He often used people’s full names, including “Logan Weston,” and preferred clear communication over small talk. During a family visit, he adjusted the room’s volume when it became too loud and prepared tea according to established household preferences.

His routines and preference for predictable systems supported both communication and sensory regulation. Under acute medical stress, his speech could become repetitive as his processing capacity declined.

Health and Disabilities

Edward was autistic and had significant sensory-access needs. He also lived with epilepsy that required ongoing treatment and monitoring.

Summer 2021 Intracranial-Pressure Crisis

In summer 2021, Edward developed dangerously elevated intracranial pressure after weeks of worsening neurological symptoms. A severe tonic-clonic seizure led to hospital admission, and medical treatment did not lower the pressure sufficiently. He underwent successful VP shunt placement at Johns Hopkins Hospital and remained hospitalized for sixteen days.

Recovery included prolonged nausea, fatigue, confusion, and repeated requests to return home. The shunt remained a permanent part of his medical care and required continued monitoring.

Family and Relationships

Eleanor Pennington

Edward was married to Eleanor Pennington, a child and adolescent psychologist. Their marriage included extensive mutual accommodation around Edward’s neurological and sensory needs and Eleanor’s role as his medical advocate.

James Pennington

Edward and Eleanor were the parents of James Pennington. Edward maintained predictable household routines and supported James’s education and theater work. The family moved from England to Baltimore when James was seven.

Alastair Hargreaves

Edward came to know Alastair Hargreaves through James’s relationship with Charlotte Hargreaves. Their friendship developed gradually despite substantial differences in their communication and intellectual styles.
